SHM/PHM in Action is a plenary session that is co-organized by the EWSHM and the parallel PHME workshop, showcasing how structural Health monitoring works in practical applications. This session features demonstrations on a variety of SHM & PHM applications from many leading or start-up companies and educational institutions in order to

  • show the audience how SHM and PHM work in practical applications,
  • a better understanding of the practical issues of different SHM & PHM systems,
  • get further feedback and requirements expressed from current and potential SHM & PHM users,
  • share experience in SHM & PHM.

We had nine demonstrations at the EWSHM 2014:

  • Palle Andersen, CEO at Structural Vibration Solutions A/S, Aalborg DK
    ARTeMIS Modal Pro – Damage Detection Plugin [9:51 min]
    A short demonstration of the damage detection plugin on a simple set of data. After that the complete system working on a real structure in Canada is demonstrated.
  • Pierre-Antoine Laeuffer, Project Manager/Engineer at Advitam Group
    Presentation of Advitam Group Infrastructure Management Solutions [8:33 min]
    Our web based EverSense© Platform can integrate all type of wired or wireless sensors. On one end, something moves, rotates, broke and evolves. On one other end, a cell-phone rang, an email is send, a spread sheet is created or circulation is stop on a large bridge. We integrate everything to deliver a turnkey solution to our customer. We will play with different type of sensors: movement, strain, acoustic, acceleration or other kind. They will be connected through wire or wireless network to internet. We will show in live, how those motion are integrated in our web interface and how the customers will be able to consult data or receive push notification if thresholds are exceeded.

    Photogrammetry based CMM [4:23 min]
    Measure of deformation of a structure part, using MoveInspect technology. Part will be control using dedicated index marks on its entire geometry, and will be deformed by constrain to show in real time deformation amplitudes on each index mark.
  • Vincent Lanticq, Business Unit Manager at Cementis, Paris/France
    THM Insight: Riyadh Bridges SHM [7:37 min]
    We present instrumentation schemes for great bridge monitoring. As examples, we shows Wadi Laban and Gulf Bridge surveillance system setup: sensors, electronic or optoelectronic devices, and communication media. We'll finally deal with SHM presenting the first results of realtime measurements on both bridges.
  • Chris Staveley, CEO at Smart Fibres Ltd, UK
    Condition monitoring of a twin-screw subsea pump based on Smart Fibres optical fibre sensing system [9:37 min]
    An SHM application will be described in which optical fibre sensing was applied to a subsea twin-screw pump and associated electric motor. Result will be presented showing how, during testing of the pump, very early stage damage in one of the rolling elements was remotely detected (a 2 micron scratch from a distance of 10 km) A live demonstration of the technology used will be given - a rotating bearing system instrumented with optical fibre sensors which monitor the load on the bearings and the bearing condition.
  • Wanli Chuang, Business development at Optilab, LLC, Phoenix/USA
    FSI Embedded System-Based FBG Interrogator [4:31 min]
    Real time, dynamic performance FSI series FBG interrogators monitoring FBG strain sensors via a video. Two formats of FSI will be shown, FSI-ID (indoor) and water proof FSI-OD (outdoor) that requires no external enclosure. Also FSI-OEM will be shown, which is ruggedized for aerospace application.
  • Jeff Bergman, Project Engineer at Acellent Technologies, Sunnyvale, CA/USA
    Real-time Active Pipeline Integrity Detection (RAPID) system for remote monitoring of corrosion in pipelines [8:05 min]
    The presentation will consist of a short presentation combined with a live demo of the RAPID systems demonstrating the ability of the system to provide remote 24/7 monitoring of corrosion over a region of pipeline. Results include localization and quantification of damage to provide inspectors with up to date information on pipeline health.
  • Antonin Goude, Embedded Control & Monitoring product Engineer at National Instruments, France
    Fleetwide online Condition Monitoring hardware and software, a video demonstration of vision and implementation [8:50 min]
    In Power Generation, lower installation costs, information technology strategies, and long term vision come together to create higher machine reliability at lower operational cost and new automation in performance monitoring, diagnostics, and advisory generation. With automation, comes increased sensory data from pumps and turbines that require new tools for data management, mining, and transformation into actionable information. This short presentation introduces the vision, challenges, and tools used for fleetwide condition monitoring applications.
  • Angel Alcaide PARDO, Engineer at Aernnova Engineering Solutions, Madrid/Spain
    PAMELA SHM™ system operating autonomously and providing SHM results [11:20 min]
    AERNnova will present the performance of the last version of PAMELA SHM™ system that consists of the electronic "all in one" SHM miniaturized device (PAMELA III) installed directly on the integrated PhA transducer surface bonded onto a structure. The system is highly automated, easy to install and operate with capacity to perform quickly many different SHM tests in huge range of test configurations. A demonstration of various operations of monitoring will be performed showing the capability of the device to execute autonomously SHM algorithms and mapping with easy interpretative information about the structure´s health.

To show how a structural health monitoring system (SHM) and prognostics (PHM) practically work. If you are working with SHM or PHM systems and would like to show in a short presentation how they practically work, then you shall participate. This presentation can be additional to exhibits or oral presentations and is specifically targeted to underline the practical aspect of SHM or PHM.


There is a significant progress in SHM and PHM technology recently for a variety of applications. This presentation shall focus on how these SHM and PHM systems work in practice in terms of installation, handling, interpretation, and robustness for the following applications:

  • operational loads monitoring,
  • damage detection,
  • health monitoring, and
  • life cycle management.

The session targets at:

  • showing the audience how SHM and PHM work in practical applications,
  • better understanding the practical issues of different SHM and PHM systems,
  • getting further feedback and requirements expressed from current and potential SHM and PHM users, and
  • SHM and PHM users to share their experience.


The session intends to show as much of demonstration cases as possible, addressing as many of the aspects mentioned below:

  • the way the monitoring system and the test is operated;
  • type of sensors and actuators (if required) and their way of attachment to components, linkage to the signal generation and acquisition unit, etc.;
  • signal generation and acquisition unit as a hardware and how it operates;
  • the way input data are entered and sensor data are received and how the result is presented during the test;
  • procedure for sensor signal processing;
  • the 'man-machine interface' such as data input and output display;
  • component(s) tested, area/volume to be monitored, loading procedure and the damage initially observed by conventional means of non-destructive testing;
  • characteristics of the system such as weight, size, volume, reliability, cost, etc.

Each presentation is allowed no more than 5 minutes through a video, internet or a hardware live demonstration only, which will be directly displayed to the audience on a large screen. Videos of company presentations will not be accepted. Videos will therefore be required to be made available to the session organizer for approval. It is mandatory that the SHM or PHM system is shown in action. Static displays are not acceptable. Each presentation will be followed by a brief Q&A session where the SHM/PHM demonstrators must answer questions from the audiences.

The test cases being presented can be either based on self-developed or purchased SHM/PHM systems. The source of the SHM or PHM hardware is eligible to be mentioned but no further advertisement from or about the supplier of the SHM or PHM system will be accepted.

Any detailed background of the SHM or PHM system and the testing can be provided through a paper in the workshop proceedings of EWSHM or PHME, respectively. Provision of a paper is however not mandatory. Exhibitors can provide a direct video link to their booth at the workshop such that demonstrations can be made from there and can be directly transmitted to the audience via a screen.
